Game 17: Miners vs. Oilers, 7:00 p.m.

Tonight the Mat-Su Miners close out a pivotal series against Peninsula Oilers at Hermon Brothers Field. Last night, the Miners took advantage of four first inning Oiler errors, and plated two runs. After Tanner Rust (Fr./New Mexico St.) tied the game with a two-run single, the Miners responded by scoring runs in the 4th and 5th innings to go on and win the game 4-2. The Miners only had 4 hits in the game, but used strong pitching from starter David Gibson (Jr./Bluefield) and relievers Ben Graff (Fr./San Francisco), Ryan Dull (Jr./UNC-Asheville), and closer Brandon Hedrick (Jr./Union College). The Miners bullpen was able to protect the Miners lead and pitch four shutout innings to close the game.

Tonight, the Miners will turn to Jeff Gonzales (Fr./Washington). The UW righty has been tremendous since joining the Miners. So far this season, Gonzales has made three starts and has a gaudy earned run average of 1.65 during that stretch. The only blemish on his statistics with the Miners came during the Summer Solstice Showdown, when he had a rough inning. Despite that, Gonzales brings an ABL earned run average into the game tonight of 2.61.
